Just watched “The Bling Ring” – not quite sure how I feel about it, to be honest.
On the one hand, it’s a bit of frivolous fluff. But on the other hand, it’s a really depressing commentary on society.
Rather typical of a movie written and directed by Sofia Coppola. It felt more like something you’d see on MTV or E!. It was shot very much as if paparazzi were following these folks around…so you don’t really get the full story. Only a moment in time, captured out of context, by someone who just wants the “good shot.” While this would have been apropos during the “press” and “court” scenes, I really don’t think it worked for the whole of the movie. That the movie was based on a Vanity Fair article is telling, I think. This wasn’t extensive, hard-hitting research.
The acting was just okay. And, considering that Emma Watson – my #2 Inappropriate Crush – was in this movie, it pains me to say that. Considering what they were given, the actors were fine. They weren’t great, but they didn’t suck. But with better material – that delved deeper into characters (rather than caricatures) – I have no doubt they would have been able to give much better performances.
I’m not wishing I could get the 1 hour and 25 minutes I spent watching this movie back…I’m just wishing that it had been time better spent.
