I saw The Hunger Games: Mockinjay -Part 2 today. Normally I would write a review. But I want to see it again before I do. Let me state here, however, that I liked it! But it’s darker and more involved than the previous films, and I want to make sure I’m not missing anything.
Going to the movies doesn’t happen in my world as frequently as I’d like. I need to do something about that – especially since we are heading into awards season. I like to see as many of the nominated films as possible. I’m afraid I might be falling behind this year. But when I do go to the theatre to see a movie, I’m that weirdo that wants to get there before the previews start. I like previews. It’s my opportunity to learn about movies I haven’t heard of or movies that I knew were coming, but didn’t realize were so close to release. And it let’s me know exactly which movies to avoid. The scary, creepy ones? Yeah…those get avoided.
So, let me throw out my list of movies that I hope to be seeing in the coming months. Assuming, of course, they get released at a theatre near me! Though, I think they all will.
CAROL: It’s probably a given that I want to see this one. I’m hoping it goes into wide release soon…and that it is released in Chicago. After not being able to see Freeheld, I’m a little bit worried. But, considering the hype over the last few months and the recent excellent reviews, it will probably make it here.
SISTERS: Okay, I admit it. This movie didn’t look great in the previews. But it did look funny. I mean, c’mon – it’s Amy Poehler and Tina Fey. Throw in some Kate McKinnon, Maya Rudolph, and John Leguizamo and it should be good for a couple hours of laughs, at least.
JOY: I’ve been waiting for this one for a while. There are a few reasons I want to see this one. First, as most people know, Jennifer Lawrence is my #1 Inappropriate Crush. If she makes a movie, I will see it. One of the things I’ve learned about Lawrence over the years is that she’s just damned good. Even if the movie she’s in is a piece of crap (*ahem* Serena), her performance holds its own. Secondly, this is a reunion of a stellar team. Lawrence, Bradley Cooper, Robert DeNiro, and David O. Russell (director). Russell works well with this group of actors and is masterful at pulling outstanding performances from his actors. Finally, the trailer just makes this look like a really great movie.
THE 5TH WAVE: I hadn’t heard of this movie prior to today. Based on the trailer I saw at the theatre, this movie can either be really good or really bad. But, Chloë Grace Moretz stars in this one and appears to carry the movie. I’ve liked her work in the past, so I’m willing to give this one a try. Plus…aliens.
PRIDE AND PREJUDICE AND ZOMBIES: I didn’t read the book. In fact, I haven’t read Austen’s book, either. But I’ve seen the BBC miniseries and the movie. I like the story. Then I saw the trailer for P&P&Z. OMG! It looks awesome! So, this one gets a definite, “Yes! I gotta see it!” from me. Plus…Lily James and Lena Headey.
THE DIVERGENT SERIES: ALLEGIANT: Haven’t read the books. I’m okay with that. It allows me to enjoy the movies for what they are rather than comparing them to the books. (Ditto for the 4 The Hunger Games movies.) I enjoyed the first two, Divergent and Insurgent. I’ve got to keep going and see the final two. Shailene Woodley has, in my opinion, grown as an actor over the last couple of years. I like her work. I’m also intrigued to see what they do with Naomi Watts’ character.
MY BIG FAT GREEK WEDDING 2: The first movie was amazing. The little movie that could ended up becoming a bigger hit after it left the theatres. (IMDB says it’s the highest grossing romantic comedy of all time.) Now, 13 years later, we finally get a sequel. It probably will not be as good as the first one. I can already tell based on the trailer. But I really don’t care. Because this group of actors – all of whom are returning for the sequel – is just an absolute delight! Sometimes it’s not about the movie as a whole. Sometimes it’s about the moments. And these people are great at moments of pure gold.
THE HUNTSMAN WINTER WAR: Charlize Theron, Emily Blunt, Jessica Chastain. ‘Nuff said.
