To those who celebrate, Happy Thanksgiving.
This has been a very long day. I was up at 2:30am to prepare the turkey and put it into the oven. My intention was to go back to bed, but that didn’t happen. By that time, I was wide awake. So, I just ended up staying awake.
I got the stuffing ready early. Once the bird was done, I had to run to the grocery. I thought I had chicken broth in the house. But when I went to get it, I found that I didn’t have any. So, off to the store I went. Once back, the stuffing went in the oven and I commenced with the making of the gravy! Very simple, really. The drippings from the bird (which is mostly butter), chicken broth, mushrooms, thickening flour. Easy peasy.
I had to cook the stuffing longer than normal. I’m getting so close to my grandmother’s stuffing. I can’t get the right consistency yet. But I was really close this year. Almost. Almost. Perhaps next year I’ll get it down.
Once it was done, everything got loaded into the car and I headed off to my aunt’s house for the meal.
We were finished eating before 2:00pm. I made the mistake of sitting in one of the comfy chairs in the living room. I ended up taking a nap for about 2 hours. It helped, but I’ll be honest with you. I’m amazed I’m still awake and functioning right now. I’m getting too old to deal on only 3 hours of sleep at night.
After spending a couple of hours chatting with my cousins, it was time to come home. I gave the kitties some turkey (which they loved) and settled in to relax. I watched TCU (my alma mater) trounce Texas. (Hook THAT, Horns!) I watched about half of “The Holiday” – which is a favorite movie. I love Kate Winslet and this is the only movie I’ve seen in which Jack Black isn’t an ass.
The relaxing will continue tomorrow. No alarms. No baking. No cooking. No Black Friday shopping. (Unless I can do it online while still in my pajamas.) Later in the day, I will need to brave the public to go to the store for candied fruit and Southern Comfort. My aunt and I are making fruit cake this weekend and that’s all I have left to pick up.
Otherwise, it will be a day of watching TV – maybe I’ll catch up on my DVR’d TV shows or fall into the black hole that is the Hallmark Channel’s holiday programming. Or perhaps I’ll read. Or maybe I’ll go see a movie. I don’t know. But no cooking or baking, that’s for sure. The most I’ll do is heat up some turkey in the microwave.
Peace. Quiet. Bliss.
